Mill Granary Cottages

Our self catering Holiday Cottages are set in beautiful rolling unspoilt countryside in Lower Teesdale on the Durham/Yorkshire border. Conveniently situated within easy reach of Northern England's most beautiful scenery and historic sites, including the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, Durham Cathedral, Barnard Castle, Richmond, Hadrians Wall, Newcastle and the Lakes. Locally there is an abundance of walking and cycling routes through peaceful lanes and quiet limewashed hamlets with everything from a Michelin-starred restaurant, to welcoming local pubs, restaurants, farm shops and cafes.

A bit about us and our cottages

We are the third generation of the Hodgson family to live on the 330 acre working farm situated in the Lower Tees valley with our two children Alice and Joseph. The mainstay of the farm business was originally a herd of dairy cows but as economic conditions for milk became ever more precarious the decision was taken to diversify into the expanding leisure industry. In 2004 a redundant 19th century granary was converted into a stylish 5 star holiday house. This soon proved to be a success so was followed with converting a further redundant farm building which was opened as the Mill Byre in 2006, Church Cottage our village property in the nearby village of Gainford was added in 2012 and Cheeseborough House a 19th century grade two-listed former weaver’s cottage in the historic market of Barnard Castle opened in 2015. We have really taken to our various roles in running the cottages and meeting our guests and want our cottages to be synonymous with exceptional comfort and quality.
